Let’s all talk about sustainability

Tuesday, September 24th | 6:00PM | The Heritage, Forest Park

This new type of small forum TEDx event is designed to spark conversation among our community. The TEDxOakParkSalon, Let's ALL Talk About Sustainability, will feature local experts, discussion and a three course meal. Our panel of experts will address sustainable practices like farm-to-table and looking to the natural world to inspire solutions to problems. Speakers include:

Ana Garcia Doyle likes to be future-facing. She believes there is no time like the present to focus on the future of our planet and of generations to come. As a founding member and Executive Director of Chicagoland’s One Earth Film Festival and in light of longtime world events, she is captured by the critical work and promise that sits at the nexus of ecology and equity. Ana has spent more than 20 years in digital publishing, marketing, and strategy. She is an active leader in the zero waste schools initiative in Oak Park’s District97, speaks professionally on topics of sustainability, is a green homeowner together with her husband Jim and is proud mama to 3 sharp, sweet young greenies.

Cheryl Muñoz is a food systems organizer living in Oak Park. To experience more meaningful connections to her local farmers and neighbors, she opened (along with hundreds of others) the Sugar Beet Food Co-op in July 2015. Her passion for education and skill sharing motivated her to establish an educational organization called Sugar Beet Schoolhouse in 2017 that is a hub for food literacy and sustainability through program development, facilitation and skill sharing. In 2017 she also took on River Forest Kitchen, a shared commercial kitchen for food entrepreneurs and serves as a small business incubator for many local food producers. Cheryl received the Golden Beet Award from the Illinois Stewardship Alliance for Community Food Development in 2014 and has twice been named to the New City’s “Big Heat” list of movers and shakers in the Chicago food scene. She lives with her two kids, Cedar and Cora, in a house filled with food and love and chickens.

Rachel Hahs is an innovative systems thinker rooted in the firm belief that life-centered design will lead us to a sustainable future. She is a Biomimicry Chicago Network Leader and co-creator of its Deep Roots Initiative. Rachel is also the creator of Think Biomimicry, a biomimicry blog and resource website. She conducts original biomimicry research on the topics of disruptive innovation and sustainable/resilient human built environments, and has used biomimicry as an innovation tool to create solutions for challenges such as food insecurity and climate change. Rachel holds a Master of Science in Biomimicry, and is a Certified Biomimicry Professional (CBP), Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) and project manager with over 14 years of experience focusing on sustainability, innovation and environmental consulting.

Tickets are $65 per person and include the cost of the meal (dietary restrictions can be accommodated). The Heritage’s specialty cocktails and other drinks will be available for purchase.

Our first TEDxOakParkSalon - “Let’s ALL Talk About Sex” - sparked a lot of conversation and revelation!
Thank you
to our moderator, 2018 TEDxOakParkWomen Speaker Christa Desir, and our panelists. We appreciate everyone who came out to view TED Talk videos, Q&A and interesting discussion throughout the evening. Our panel of experts talked about consent, focusing on how to talk to our kids about consent, promote an empowered, self-aware and body-positive mindset.
